Gov. Dapo Abiodun
The stool of the Awujale became vacant following the demise of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, after over 65 years on the throne.
Speaking after a meeting with members of the Awujale Council in Iperu, the governor said it was important for Ijebuland to install a new monarch without delay, stressing that “nature abhors a vacuum.”
Abiodun assured that his administration would respect the outcome of the nomination process and support whoever emerges.
“Nature abhors a vacuum, and the process of installing another Awujale has started. That was what we discussed today,” the governor said.
“The pathway to having a regency is to ensure that all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed, and that the processes enshrined in the Laws of Ijebuland are strictly followed. I must say that we all agreed that we are on the same page.
The governor expressed optimism that the succession process would be peaceful and inclusive, describing the kingmakers as men of integrity who contributed to the stability and long reign of the late monarch.
He added that the meeting was his first with the Council since the expiration of the 40-day mourning period for the late Oba.
“This meeting was to commiserate with them on the passing of our revered monarch and to reaffirm my confidence in them. Despite the rumours, the Council remains intact and united. There is no disharmony among them, and they are working hand in glove with one another,” Abiodun said.
Also speaking, the Olootu Olowa and Deputy Chairman of the Council, Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to peace and unity, stressing that the chiefs would continue to work together in the interest of Ijebuland.
